An Original South African WhatsApp Drama

When it comes to planning a funeral, there’s a lot to do in very little time.

Uk’shona Kwelanga is a unique drama series which followed a family’s WhatsApp conversation in real-time to highlight the struggles of preparing for a funeral when money is tight. It was written in collaboration with Bongi Ndaba, renowned former scriptwriter of iconic TV shows like Isidingo and Generations, and featured some of the country’s best-known actors.

The Plot

After the sudden and unexpected death of Bab’ Langa, tensions soon start to rise in the Langa family. As each episode unfolds, they face financial pressure, family secrets and unanswered questions. The story was told through WhatsApp text messages, photos and voice notes over the 7 days leading up to the funeral.
