About the Awards
The Sanlam Group Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism have been recognising exceptional financial journalism in Africa since 1974.
The awards are open to African journalists in print, online, radio and TV media who are based in Africa, working in an African news organisation and publish or broadcast their financial stories on the continent.
The 2022-2023 edition of the awards introduced Santam as a co-sponsor. The competition also introduced a new category on Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG). The introduction of the ESG category recognises the rise in global prominence of sustainability issues, especially corporate governance, decision-making on investments, governmental environmental policies as well as extreme weather events impacting society and environment.
The African Growth Story category, introduced in 2013, recognizes exceptional financial journalism about the growth of the continent in terms of trade, investment, infrastructure development, economic and monetary policy, and related topics. Stories for this category must reflect Pan-African outlook along with free trade and integration across African nations.
An independent panel of judges selects the winners of the awards. The panel comprises retired business editors, media trainers, academics in journalism, economists, and communications advisors.
The winning entries are selected according to a criteria including news value, impact, rigour in reporting, analytical value, originality, integrity, demonstration of specialist knowledge on the subject matter and storytelling.
