Angela Agoawike

Media Practitioner (Nigeria)

Angela is a media practitioner with international experience spanning diplomacy, journalism, public relations and NGO projects. She is a faculty member of the Centre for Financial Journalism (CFJ), Nigeria’s financial journalism training and research centre. Angela has served as head of public relations and information department at the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Before joining OPEC, Angela edited three national weekly papers: The Post Express on Sunday 1999-2001; Daily Times on Saturday 2002-2004, and National Interest on Saturday 2004-2006. She has also worked at several international organisations including UNICEF, UNDP, USAID and NGOs in Nigeria, Ghana and United States.

Angela has a BA degree from Abia State University and an MA degree from the University of Lagos.

Charles Naudé

Retired Editor (South Africa)

Charles was the first national editor of Sake24. After graduating from Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg), he joined Die Burger as a journalist in 1974. His extensive experience on different journalism beats included reporting Namibia’s independence based in Windhoek the Naspers’ Afrikaans dailies in 1989 and 1990. He joined Beeld in 1992 where he became senior assistant editor in 1993. Charles was seconded to City Press for two years as associate editor and returned to Beeld as deputy editor and became senior deputy editor in 2003. In this capacity, he was responsible for launching Sake24 as an independent financial daily sold with Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad. Charles retired in 2009.

Emily May Brown

Media Studies Academic (Namibia)

Emily is a journalism and media studies lecturer at Polytechnic Namibia. Her main interests are in media law and project-based learning. She frequently participates in domestic and international research projects to analyse the quality of media coverage on gender representation in mainstream news reporting.

She has coordinated regional journalism summer schools for mid-career journalists in the Southern Africa Development Community region.

Emily is a Fulbright scholar and grant recipient of the Dorothea S. Clarke Chair in Feminist Jurisprudence at Cornell University. She currently serves as the Chair of the regional organisation, Gender Links (Southern Africa), headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Emily holds a BA Honours degree from the University of South Africa and a Master of Science degree in Journalism/Mass Communication from Iowa State University.

Freddie Rayborn Bulley

Financial Journalism Trainer (Ghana)

Rayborn is a retired professional broadcast and financial journalist, after a long career at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation between 1992 and 2014. He pioneered the use of the internet in news gathering at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and introduced the use of computers to replace typewriters in newsroom. He was a correspondent for Ceemarketwatch.com, an economic and political news portal based in Eastern Europe and a contributor to the Business in Ghana news magazine. Rayborn has undertaken international assignments including the 2005 world trade organization summit in Hong Kong and pre-Economic Partnership Agreement engagements in the Ecowas region.

Rayborn holds a diploma in Journalism, an Oxford University diploma in Systems Analysis and Design and a basic and intermediate level certificate in stock trading. He also holds a number of certificates from the World Bank Institute and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

Currently, Rayborn is the president of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalist, which offers training for practising journalists interested in pursuing financial and economic journalism.

Aggie Asiimwe Konde

Chartered Marketer CIM Fellow and ESG Advisor (Uganda)

Aggie is the Vice President, Program Innovation and Delivery at Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). She leads a specialized team of scientists and generalists across 11 AGRA countries in East, West and Southern Africa responsible for the strategic role of portfolio design and development, monitoring, and implementation to achieve Agricultural transformation by 2030 with a focus on ESG.

Aggie is a Fellow with the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a blue ocean enthusiast who is pragmatic and results-oriented with over 20 years of experience across multiple private and public sector industries including tobacco, beverages, multimedia, textile and apparel, aquaculture and agriculture, with diverse entrepreneurial expertise in leveraging innovative solutions that drive sustainable economic growth. Aggie currently serves in different capacities on three active boards, Stanbic Holdings Uganda Ltd, Doctors Choice and Medaasi Investments Ltd.

Aggie is a coach and author of the book Purposeful Focus. She is a social scientist with an MBA from the University of Liverpool and has trained with the world-renown Springfield Centre in Market Systems Development. She is a pioneering student of the Global CEO Program (IESA -University of Navarra), completed the Harvard Executive Business program, and is a Fast Forward alumna class of 2020. Aggie enjoys playing golf in her free time.

Professor Nixon Kariithi

Convener of the Independent Judging Panel for the Sanlam Group Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism (Kenya)

Nixon, is one of Africa’s leading scholars in journalism, public communications and media studies. He is founder and CEO of Tangaza Media, a communications agency. Over the past 27 years, he has played a leading role in researching and teaching business and economics journalism and media studies in Africa.

Nixon was associate professor and Pearson Chair of Economics Journalism at Rhodes University, Grahamstown from 1999 until 2004, and associate professor and head of media studies at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg between 2004 and 2009. He has also been appointed visiting professor at Cairo University, Egypt; Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia; and City University of New York, USA. He is currently research associate at the University of Pretoria.

Nixon has consulted on corporate reputation management, stakeholder management, international business issues, change management and organisational communication with over 50 leading organisations in Africa. Among his well-celebrated achievements is the global patent of MRI, the world’s first index of media reputation, an innovation that opened new ways of evaluating the impact of media coverage on corporate reputation management.

Tom Indimuli

Communications Consultant (Kenya)

Tom is a communications professional with 23 years of experience in positioning brands through public relations. He has an all-round understanding of the communications function having worked in the media, academia, and public relations agencies as well as serving as the head of corporate communications at multi-national organisations in Kenya. Tom is an expert in Integrated Communications, drawing from his knowledge and training in journalism, communication studies, marketing, and business management.

Tom’s professional track record includes serving as Head of Corporate Communications at Standard Chartered Bank in Kenya, Lecturer of Journalism at the University of Nairobi, and Business News Editor at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

Tom obtained a Postgraduate diploma in Business Management from Kenya Institute of Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Ulrich Joubert

Independent Economist (South Africa)

Ulrich’s career has spanned the civil service, state corporations and the banking sector. He was the group economist at Transnet from 1989 to March 2006. He worked as an economist at Kruger International from April 2006 to May 2012. Since April 2009 he has been involved with the Bureau for Economic Research, University of Stellenbosch. Currently Ulrich works as an independent economist.

Ulrich’s views on the economy appear regularly basis in print media, radio and TV. He is a past chairman of the Johannesburg Afrikaanse Sakekamer, and the Economic Advisory Committee of the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut. He serves on the executive council of the AHI. He has won the Beeld newspaper economist of the year competition three times.

Professor Ylva Rodny-Gumede

Media Studies and International Relations Academic (South Africa)

Ylva is the head of the division for internationalisation and a professor in the School of Communication at the University of Johannesburg. She is a senior associate researcher at the Stanhope Centre for International Communications Policy Research affiliated to the London School of Economics as well as Senior Leader for the University at Universitas 21. Ylva holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University as well as a Master of Arts degree in Politics from the University of Witwatersrand and a Master of Arts in Journalism from Cardiff University. She also holds a diploma in Marketing and Business Communication from the Institute of International Education in Stockholm.

Ylva has worked in journalism, marketing and PR and has consulted for several government, private and academic institutions in Europe and Southern Africa including the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation and the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education. She is the former President of the Southern African Communications and Media Association and serves as a non-Executive Director on the board of the Institute for Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) and Brand South Africa.

Musa Zondi

Communications Consultant (South Africa)

Musa is an award-winning journalist named the Environmental Journalist of the Year for print media in 1994. He holds a Journalism and Media Studies Honours degree from Wits University as well as an MBA from Henley Business School. He has worked as a journalist, writer, sub-editor, designer, news editor, assistant editor as well as editor-at-large. His last years in media was in a management role as a deputy publisher before branching off to work as communications specialist in the public sector and private sector including public relations and agency work. He maintains deep interest in media and media development and recently has been involved with the Presidential Climate Commission facilitating sessions for local radio stations in how they can cover issues of climate change. Musa is an Oxford University Reuters Foundation Fellow.
