Michael Falk

Michael Falk, CFA and Certified Retirement Counsellor (CRC) is a partner with the Focus Consulting Group, and a partner and chief strategist on a global macro hedge fund. Formerly, he was the CIO in charge of manager due diligence and asset allocation for a multi-billion dollar advisory firm. His background includes extensive asset allocation research and portfolio development expertise along with a multi-faceted understanding of behavioral finance and retirement issues. His perspective acknowledges that the wisdom of crowds can denigrate into madness at times. Assets should be managed with the serenity to accept the market’s realities; the courage to pursue its opportunities; and the ongoing pursuit of wisdom to understand the difference.

Aside from his consulting work, Michael is part of the CFA Institute’s Approved Speaker List, a contributing member to the Financial Management Association’s (FMA) practitioner demand-driven academic research initiative (PDDARI) group, and the Vice Chair of the Plan Sponsor Council of America’s Investment Committee.

He has also taught for DePaul University (Chicago, Illinois) on their Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certificate programme as an adjunct faculty member, as well as on behalf of the CFA Society of Chicago on their Claritas programme. He is frequently published and quoted in the financial press.

Michael graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S in Finance and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Retirement Counselor (CRC) designations.

Dr Philippa Malmgren (International keynote speaker)

Dr. Philippa Malmgren helps companies, investors, public audiences and policymakers better understand how risk and prices will move across the economic landscape. She connects the dots, bringing together insights about markets, politics, policy and geopolitics that signal important and investable trends.

She was the Deputy Head of Global Strategy at UBS and the Chief Currency Strategist for Bankers Trust. She headed the Global Investment Management business for Bankers Trust in Asia.

The clients of DRPM Group include many investment banks, fund managers and hedge funds as well as sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, global corporations and family offices. She has an especially strong view on the importance of manufacturing in modern economies and is a part owner and on the board of a robotics and manufacturing firm in the UK that builds non-weaponised drones.

She was the deputy head of Global Strategy at UBS and the chief currency strategist for Bankers Trust. She headed the Global Investment Management business for Bankers Trust in Asia.

She has a B.A. from Mount Vernon College and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. She completed the Harvard Programme on National Security and has a certificate from the 101st Airborne Division’s Sabalauski’s Air Assault School. In 2013, she was the keynote speaker for the London School of Economics graduation ceremony.

She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Chatham House, The Institute for International Strategic Security and The Royal Geographical Society.

Caroline da Silva

Caroline Da Silva was appointed by the Minister of Finance to the Deputy Executive Officer position at the FSB in September 2013. In this role Caroline is the Registrar of Financial Services Providers and supervises all FSPs across all of the relevant sectors. She is also responsible for consumer education.

Prior to this appointment Caroline worked in the insurance industry for the past 27 years holding various positions in both the broking and underwriting disciplines as well as within the insurance industry association. She resigned as an Executive of Mutual and Federal Insurance company where she headed up Sales, to join the FSB since she felt her entire career had been leading to this particular point.

Throughout her 27 years in the industry, Caroline was always actively involved in regulation. She sat on various boards appointed by various Ministers including two FSB Advisory Boards. She was appointed to the FAIS Advisory Board 10 years ago, so is no stranger to the FAIS environment.

Professor Steve Burgess

Professor Steven Michael Burgess is director of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Business School and professor of marketing. He was previously the long-time research director and professor of Business Administration in Marketing in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town and the Association of Marketers professor of marketing in the University of the Witwatersrand.

He was one of five people who represented President Mandela’s new government on its first trade mission to the USA in 1994 and has held positions of major responsibility in business as managing director of Autopage Cellular in the Altron Group, ConsumaData (now part of Experian South Africa) and as a senior marketing executive at Johnson & Johnson.

Professor Burgess is an acknowledged thought-leader for his research on marketing and management in the emergent markets context, which is published and cited frequently in respected journals and textbooks around the world. He has published five books.

He is the recipient of several awards, including the first-ever Marketing Science Institute Visiting Scholar Award by the Marketing Science Institute (Boston, USA), the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business International Alumni Award for lifetime contributions to marketing in South Africa and the USA, and the Millennium Merit Certificate from the South African Association of Marketers. In 2013, he received the Golden Star Educational and Academic Excellence Award for Outstanding Contributions to Marketing Education at the World Marketing Summit in Malaysia.

Peter Chun

Peter Chun joined Colonial First State in 2002. Colonial First State is the wealth division of Australia’s largest bank (Commonwealth Bank) and is the largest retirement provider in Australia. As General Manager, Product & Investments, Peter is responsible for managing and driving the development of Colonial First State's product solutions (including the market leading FirstChoice and FirstWrap platforms), investment functions including the FirstChoice multi-manager investment team, Third Party Alliance funds, and the Performance and Analytics team.

He was previously Director at Credit Suisse Asset Management as Head of Product and Marketing for 3 years and prior to that 5 years at BT Financial Group as Vice President, Product Development. He has also held actuarial roles at ANZ Funds Management, Towers Perrin and Prudential.

Peter is a qualified actuary and holds a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University and Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investments (ASIA). He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), and is a director on a number of Commonwealth Bank subsidiary boards. He has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Stewart Cazier

Stewart Cazier has over 26 years’ experience in investment, general and life assurance businesses in finance, operations and distribution roles.

He started his career with a brief spell in the French construction industry at Bouygues before qualifying as an accountant at Eagle Star in the UK in 1991. He then joined a life assurance start-up at NatWest Bank where he established the financial accounting function before becoming financial controller of the Regulated Sales force, leading a radical overhaul of the business. Following this, he joined Norwich Union in 1996 to manage the logistics of their demutualisation, after which he become chief operating officer (CEO) of Norwich Union Investment Funds, a mutual funds business. In 2001 he helped to establish the retail business of New Star as joint managing director which was subsequently acquired by Henderson Global Investors where he became Managing Director of Global Distribution. Stewart has recently joined Old Mutual Wealth as CEO of Distribution.

Stewart has played a leading role in many UK industry initiatives and sat on the FSA working group, which developed the original RDR proposals eventually implemented at the beginning of 2013. He chairs the retail committee of the principal UK trade body – the Investment Management Association – and so is at the centre of many regulatory developments for the UK mutual funds industry. He also founded some joint venture asset management companies with leading UK advisory networks.

David Ferguson

Born and bred in Edinburgh and with a geeky interest in technology from a very early age, the formative years of David’s career were spent as a trainee actuary with Life Association of Scotland before stints with Ivory & Sime, Scottish Life International and strategic consultancy The Abacus.

Having concluded that the prevailing business wasn’t fit for human consumption, David embarked on a mission to create the UK’s first crowdfunded and genuinely collaborative platform which resulted in the creation of Nucleus in 2006. He remains immensely proud to lead the small team that has made Nucleus a credible and refreshing market participant, particularly at a time when honesty and accountability have never mattered more.

David lives with his wife Monique and daughter Nicole in Edinburgh, and enjoys dining in, dining out, live music and following the city’s 2012 Scottish Cup winning Heart of Midlothian FC.

David Gluckman

David Gluckman is an executive committee member within Sanlam Employee Benefits. He is the executive charged with the retirement fund industry reform responsibilities on behalf of Sanlam Employee Benefits. ​

A qualified actuary, David began his career at Liberty Life in 1988. In 1992, he became an actuary in the Group Benefits Consultancy at Liberty Life, before being appointed as a management consultant for Liberty’s Specialised Corporate Consulting in 1995. ​

In 1998 he founded Oracle Employee Benefits, and held the position of an executive director. The company’s name was changed to Simeka Employee Benefits in 2000 and he took on the position of managing director. Under his leadership, Simeka grew into one of the leading players in the retirement fund industry. In 2005 Simeka acquired Sanlam Consultants & Actuaries and was rebranded.​

In 2007, Sanlam bought out the majority shareholders in Simeka Consultants & Actuaries, and David transferred into Sanlam Employee Benefits as managing director of the newly formed Sanlam Umbrella Solutions division. ​

David obtained a Bachelor of Science from UCT in 1987, majoring in statistics. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries in Edinburgh in 1991 and also obtained a diploma in Retirement Fund Management from the Insurance Institute of South Africa in 1997. He is currently a member (previously convener) of the Actuarial Society’s Social Security committee. He has also served as a member of the Actuarial Society’s Retirement Matters and Surplus Committees. ​

Alwyn van der Merwe

Alwyn van der Merwe was appointed director of investments at Sanlam Private Wealth in May 2007. Alwyn, who also sits on Sanlam Private Wealth’s executive committee and board, has 23 years' experience in financial services and is well known for his successes as a fund manager for various leading unit trust funds.

He began his career at Old Mutual Investments and subsequently moved to Old Mutual Asset Management where he was involved in a wide range of investment activities. He was part of the team that launched the Old Mutual Equity Fund in Namibia and also ran the Old Mutual Shareholders’ Fund and the Old Mutual Balanced Fund, both of which are unit trust funds. On the pension fund side, he was responsible for the management of third-party balanced funds. As a voting member of the asset allocation team he was co-responsible for the asset allocation decisions for third-party funds managed by Old Mutual Investment Group.

Alwyn acts as the custodian of the Sanlam Private Wealth investment philosophy and is responsible for the investment process and research at Sanlam Private Wealth, as well as the performance of the model portfolios. He works very closely with Sanlam Private Wealth's team of portfolio managers to ensure client performance in line with their risk appetite.

Alwyn has a BCom, an Honours degree in Economics and an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch.

Jean Lombard

Jean qualified as an actuary in 2003 and has been in the financial services industry for the past 16 years. He was appointed Head of Business Integration and Research at Glacier by Sanlam in 2009. Prior to joining Glacier, he worked on various strategic projects within Sanlam Personal Finance and has held senior roles at Sanlam Multi Manager International and Sanlam Personal Portfolios. His key responsibility at Glacier is to ensure that the company has appropriate solutions with which to serve the affluent market as well as the necessary advice strategies and tools through which to deliver these solutions to the market. In addition, he provides strategic leadership to the well-known Glacier research team, the marketing team as well as the fiduciary service function.

Jean is passionate about clients and their financial well-being as well as the financial services industry in general and has been representing Sanlam on the Disclosure Sub Committee of The Association for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA) since 2012. He has also been part of the core team responsible for the implementation of Treating Customers Fairly throughout Sanlam and in particular within Glacier by Sanlam.

Jean is a member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and a fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK.

Anton Gildenhuys

As chief executive of SPF Actuarial, Anton Gildenhuys is responsible for the actuarial function of Sanlam Personal Finance (SPF), a business unit in the Sanlam Group focusing on the retail market in South Africa.

Anton was a Sanlam bursary student and joined Sanlam in January 1997. He was subsequently appointed to the positions of valuations actuary, development actuary, head of product development and chief executive of SPF Strategic Business Development.

Anton is a qualified actuary. He is married with three children and in his spare time, he thoroughly enjoys wildlife and the outdoors.

Michael Jordaan

Michael Jordaan, venture capitalist and wine enthusiast stepped down as chief executive officer (CEO) of First National Bank in August last year, one of SA’s largest banks with a customer base of nearly nine million.

The former banker now heads up a private investment company, Montegray Capital and lends a strategic-hand to various businesses, including the mobile messaging company Mxit. He is also non-executive director of the JSE Limited.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the financial services sector and nearly a decade at the helm of the Bank, Michael oversaw the move away from traditional banking toward rewarding ecosystem-centric solutions for customers, and led FNB to be named the “World’s Most Innovative Bank” in the 2012 BAI-Finacle Global Banking Innovation Awards, held in Washington DC. He is also the recipient of the CNBC Africa Business Leader of the Year for Southern Africa award.

During his time as CEO, Michael placed significant focus on cultivating an innovative culture within FNB. Under his guidance, the FNB Innovators’ Programme was launched in 2004 and at the time of his resignation 7244 innovations had been implemented. Encouraging self-generated innovation has improved FNB’s ability to respond to the exponential rate of business change in the global banking market.

Michael is well known within the South African context as being on the forefront of leadership, innovation and technology. In 2009, he was awarded the regional Excel Award for his employee communication programme called “On MJ’s Mind”, by the Association of Business Communicators and in 2011 he made the Top Five list of SA Newsmakers of the Year for FNB’s social media presence. Michael is also an avid Tweeter and it was not uncommon for him to respond to FNB customers via Twitter.

Alec Hogg

Alec Hogg is a well-known media entrepreneur and financial journalist who runs Biznews.com

He founded Moneyweb in 1997 as a small business above his garage at home, which was promptly listed on the JSE during the Internet Bubble (July 1999).

After 13 years of building Moneyweb, Alec took a semi-sabbatical in 2010 and, during his absence, Caxton acquired control of Moneyweb. Alec subsequently returned to Moneyweb as chief executive officer (CEO) in April 2012, taking it quickly to profitability once again. In July 2013 he moved back into television as the CNBC anchor for its Africa Power Lunch programme and launched Biznews.com in early August 2013.

He now writes and edits Biznews.com with a committed team of experienced journalists and associates, and is a popular keynote speaker and panel facilitator at high level conferences.

He still serves as a non-executive director of MoneyWeb Holdings, which he has done since 2012. . He also briefly served as a Director of Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Ltd in 2007.

He travels widely, including annual visits for the World Economic Forum in Davos (10 attendances) and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway AGM in Omaha (5 times).

Chris Griffith

Chris Griffith is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Anglo American Platinum. He is the former executive head of Joint Ventures for Anglo Platinum Limited and former general manager of Anglo Platinum's Amandebult Platinum Mine and Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine.

Chris Griffith has been CEO of Kumba Iron Ore since 2008. He has 18 years’ experience in Anglo American Platinum, having served as head of operations for joint ventures and as general manager of the Amandelbult Section and Bafokeng-Rasimone Platinum Mine. Chris holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) Honours from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Anglo American Platinum Limited announced the appointment of Chris Griffith as CEO following Neville Nicolau’s decision to resign, to pursue other interests.

Chris has been CEO of Kumba Iron Ore Limited since 2008 and was previously head of Joint Venture Operations for the Platinum business. His appointment as Anglo American Platinum CEO will take effect from 1 September 2012.

As CEO of Kumba Iron Ore, Chris oversaw the delivery of one of Anglo American’s flagship growth projects, Kolomela, five months ahead of schedule, on budget, and with a world class safety performance record. He also oversaw the successful commissioning and ramp up of the Sishen JIG Plant.

Jabu Mabuza

Jabulane (Jabu) Mabuza is currently chairman of the board of directors of Telkom SA, and still serves as the deputy chairman for Tsogo Sun Holdings, where he was previously group chief executive.

Jabu also served on the SA Tourism board for nine years and as its chairman for the last six. He is currently chairman of the Casino Association of South Africa and President of Business Unity South Africa.

Jabu currently serves on the Corporate Council on Africa in Washington as a board member and on the World Travel and Tourism Council in England as an executive committee member. He was a B20 Delegate to the G20 in Saint Petersburg in 2013. Previously he served on the boards of Tanzania Breweries and Castle Brewing Company in Kenya.

In 2013, SA’s Minister of Tourism presented Jabu with the Lifetime Achiever Award – The Lilizela Tourism Award for his exceptional contribution to the tourism sector. In 2011, the Black Business Executive Circle presented him with the Chairman’s Award for “Black Business Leaders at the Pinnacle of Thought Leadership". In 2009, Jabu was the recipient of the “Onkgopotse Tiro” Excellence Award in Business 2009, in recognition of his leadership and excellence in business.

Jabu was also a finalist for the IMM Marketing Person of the Year in 1991. In 1997 he received the Black Management Forum Champion of Black Economic Empowerment - Pioneer’s Award, and in 2004 the Impumelelo, Top 300 Empowerment Awards as a Top Black Business Personality of the Year.

Nersan Naidoo

Nersan was appointed Chief Executive: Investment Core in November 2013. His responsibilities include the oversight of investment teams and investment operations areas for asset management, multi management, hedge funds, derivative structuring, Africa asset management and Satrix. Prior to that, he was founding member and Chief Executive Officer of the Sanlam Investments multi-manager business from 2002, when he joined the Sanlam Group. He was instrumental in building the business to its status as one of the leading multi-managers in South Africa. In addition to his responsibilities as CEO, Nersan was also Head of the previous Investment Services sub-cluster, which included Sanlam Collective Investments, BlueInk Investments, Graviton Financial Partners and Graviton Wealth Management. He has served as a member of the Sanlam Investments EXCO for the past 6 years.

Nersan’s track record of 14 years spans extensive experience in investment management and business leadership, both locally and internationally. Operating from London, he managed the international multi-management business for 2 years before returning to South Africa in 2009, as CEO of Sanlam Multi Manager International. He joined Sanlam from UBS Warburg where he completed their graduate training programme in London and Johannesburg.

Nersan is a CFA Charterholder and holds a BSc Elec Eng (Hons) degree. He also has postgraduate diploma in Organisational Leadership from Oxford University.

Anne Cabot-Alletzhauser

Anne heads up the Alexander Forbes Research Institute – an initiative that looks at the full spectrum of issues confronting savings and investments for South Africa in particular, and Africa in general. As Head of Research, Anne’s primary focus is overseeing Alexander Forbes’ thought leadership initiatives, in particular the Benefits Barometer and AF Pensions Index. Anne also heads up investment research at Alexander Forbes and is responsible for developing AF branded institutional and retail investment solutions.

Before joining Alexander Forbes in late 2010, Anne spent 32 years managing pension fund assets in North America, Japan, the UK, Europe and South Africa. Her primary focus in this capacity was global asset allocation, risk management and quantitative modelling. In 1992, she moved to South Africa and pioneered the development of the multi-manager management approach to pension fund management that has become the hallmark of that industry today.

Anne is a member of the CFA Institute and has produced a number of papers for both academic journals and the lay press on issues relating to asset management and on how the consulting industry could enhance their value-add to investors. She has been a frequent speaker, both in South Africa and internationally, on topics ranging from risk management, portfolio structuring, manager selection, behavioural finance and decision-making, performance assessment and the specific requirements of pension fund management.

In addition to the Benefits Barometer, Anne has published A Trustee’s Guide to Investment Management (Butterworth) and founded the quarterly research publication Collective Insight which translates the latest research findings on South African investing to the lay reader and pension fund trustees. Anne is qualified with an M.A.as well as an M.Ed in Development Anthropology from Columbia University.
